Summer 2011 Message from the President
Hello to our MSIDT Alumni and Current Students!
Summer is here and we have a lot to share. So much has happened since my last message in the fall.
Elections
First off, elections are coming. If you are a current, paid, active member of the alumni association, you will receive an email from Cindy Edwards, our VP of Chapter Development by June 1, 2011. You will be asked to vote on the current open offices. You will have until June 14, 2011 to vote. Please keep your eyes open for this email.
June 22, 2011 Annual Meeting at Golleher Hall at CSUF
We will be having our annual meeting June 22, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. at Golleher Hall. During this meeting we will be announcing the new board, have a presenter and presenting some awards to people who have contributed to our success.
We’re still looking for a speaker, so if you are interested, please reach out to Kristi Smemoe by Friday, June 3, 2010.
We will be having a door prize raffle for two lucky attendees. By attending, your name will go into the hat for a $25 gift card to Ruby’s Diner or a $25 gift card to Pat & Oscars restaurant.
Additionally, if you are a 2011 graduate, we will hold a special door prize raffle for Cohort 8 attendees (you must be present to win). The winner will receive 2 AMC movie tickets.
2010-2011 Past Webinars
We had three webinars this last year. We hope you were able to join us for them. The webinars this year included:
- September 2010: LoTonya Motley presented, "What/Why/When to Use Technology with Learning?"
- December 2010: Iskandaria Masduki presented, "Case Study: Converting Classroom to Online Instruction"
- April 2011: Randal Fujimoto presented, "An Introduction to Personal Learning Networks"
If you would be interested in presenting in a future event, please contact Kristi Smemoe at programs@msidtaa.org.
Membership Drive Raffle
We had 4 new members join us from October to December and are proud to announce the winner of the drawing was Jeremy Burnstein from Cohort 7. Jeremy won a $50 gift card to Lucille’s Smokehouse Bar-B-Que!
Fundraising
We have held two fundraisers this year, earning over $1,200.00 towards the MSIDTAA Scholarship! This will pay for two full $500 scholarships next year, as well as leave us with a little towards the following year. Help us to continue to help future students. Contact Tai James if you would like to contribute or participate in future events!
New from MSIDT
We are about to have our 10 year anniversary! Cohort 10 will be starting next year and will be bigger than ever. Beginning this fall there will be twice as many MSIDT students. That means 2 cohorts each year, which means twice the excitement and twice the number of new alumni. Let’s help celebrate this accomplishment! There will be a big celebration hosted by the MSIDT program and the MSIDTAA. If you have any suggestions for the celebration, please send them to info@msidtaa.org. We have forwarded all of the suggestions we have received! Thank you for the ideas you have already submitted!
Thank You!
This will be my final year as an officer of the MSIDTAA. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone for three very fun years as an officer. We have grown this alumni chapter from 10 members to 50 members. Our fundraising and professional development events have grown and taken on a life of their own. We have a presence on Facebook, LinkedIn and a blog! It has been a privilege to be part of the MSIDTAA.
Look forward to seeing you at our annual event!

10 Years and Growing
Cohort 8 is putting the finishing touches on their final projects and making that exciting trip to the library to drop off their papers for binding. Graduation is May 22 and the MSIDT Alumni Association couldn't be happier for each and every member of the Cohort 8 graduating class.
Cohort 9 has 2 semesters under their belts and are approaching the halfway point in their studies. Terms like Constructivism, Androgogy, and ADDIE are beginning to haunt their dreams. Cohort 9 is well on their way to becoming full fledged Instructional Designers.
Interviews for Cohort 10 will be held very soon and this cohort will launch the 10th anniversary of the MSIDT program. What an exciting time the next year will be with plans being made to celebrate our programs first decade. We can take this year to look back, even as we are looking forward.
There is no better time to be a part of the MSIDT Alumni Association. We are growing in numbers, as well as in confidence and community. I can't wait to participate in the next 10 years of growth!

Webinar - Friday, December 3 at 12:00 p.m. PST
Check your inbox for your Evite to next week’s event. This is not to be missed!
Presenter: Iskandaria Masduki, MS-ID&T. Research Associate & Instructional Design Coordinator at Florida State University.
Topic: Case Study: Converting Classroom to Online Instruction
The FDOT experience in applying research to competency-based training.
This webinar is a case study on how the Florida Department of Transportation converted classroom-based courses to online training. With the effects of the budget deficit being felt at all levels of government, state agencies are increasingly exploring the use of online training as a means to save time and cost. The variety of training has also increased to include soft skills as well as complex technical skills. This session examines how multiple research methods were used to identify job-specific competencies of Roadway Characteristics Inventory technicians. The competencies then became the framework for curriculum content, as well as design and development of online modules.
Based on the rich data generated from the research methods, a task-centered strategy was used to replace the topic-centered method used in the classroom training. This webinar discusses the challenges of implementing such an approach and shares guidelines on how to convert topic-based to task-centered training.
This webinar will include a case study as well as supporting documentation. Participants will be able to download and prepare for the webinar in advance. The tools provided are designed to assist participants in understanding the process utilized to convert the course and implement topic-centered methodology.

Eighteen people attended, including members of the Latino Chapter. We are still collecting donations but our current earnings toward the MSIDT Scholarship are $500.
